1. The best SEOers are most of the time the people you can't afford

We would all like to throw some money at the problem (your website ranking in Google) and get it done. The problem is, most of the time SEO services are just not worth it.

They might have worked in an age when Google didn't care much about fighting off spammers, but right now, most of the time is money flushed down the toilet.

Which brings us to the point. Who is the best SEOer? Well, it's an webmaster, or a company that has been successful in raking (and maintaining the position) of their website for a site in a high competitive market or very closed related to yours.

The problem is, most of the time these SEOers do not offer their services as they are pretty busy themselves. SEO is very lucrative... and even if you do manage to get their attention, your quote needs to be quite high to keep them interested.

That's why, most of the time, the best SEOers are not available.

2. Quantity will get you into trouble

If you take a look at the current SEO services in the marketplace, most of them will try to catch your eye with flashy graphics and wow you with a gazillion backlinks.

Those services will only achieve to get your website banned. You may enjoy a couple of days or even weeks of rankings (if you're lucky), but your website will go down quite fast and you will never be able to recover from the Google penalties.

If that's your business model, blast things up, spend money on websites that may rank quickly, pocket more than you're spending and doing it over and over as long as it's profitable, that's fine by me.

Goodbacklinks are the result of good marketing. That's not something you can do with couple of dollars or even couple of hundreds. A good SEO service should start from a minimum of $500 / month. That's not to say all expensive services are good..

That's just because a minimum of $500 gives you a little room to market your site, but not a not a lot. The more budget you have, the better the marketing. The SEO company will be able to pay for better designers and experts to create great content that will attract backlinks from sites that don't engage in the "backlink exchange" things. Backlinks that really act as votes of confidence and weigh in the search engine wars.

Think about getting links from your competition. Will you be able to do it? Will you be able to do something that will make most of the people in your market link to you? Will you create something amazing that people will use?

If you can, then do it yourself. You will be able to spend a little more money in promoting your site if you do it yourself, but you will not have access to experts. You may find that money is not the only cost involved, but a lot of your time also. Not only that, but making mistakes that an expert will not do, may cost you your search engine traffic.
