Warrior Forum posts come and go very, very fast. I'm going to use this blog to keep track of some of my favorite WF-based ideas, and to share some additional concepts.

A PDF mystery was really an FTP mystery

Be sure to use Binary or Auto mode when uploading PDF files over FTP.

In this WF discussion, the original poster was baffled by why his PDF's showed up OK on one site, and garbled on another.

There are two potential causes of this discrepancy - assuming the same browser was used to download from both of the sites.

First, there could have been two different versions of the PDF - automatically generated, correctly in one case and incorrectly in another.

That might have happened, for instance, if there was custom PDF creation code that choked on European accent characters because the programmer assumed all text fields would be in ASCII.

But in this instance, the file was already prepared and didn't upload correctly.

The solution was not in PDF at all, but in FTP: be sure to use Binary or Auto, not ASCII mode, when uploading PDF's to your web server.
