Features vs. Benefits in Photography, part 1

Posted 04-16-2009 at 09:27 AM by Adaptive

Some people need help clarifying features and benefits. I'll use an example from photography to put this distinction in focus.

Photography is about the art and craft of capturing a magic moment when light showed beauty. Great photographers desire the feeling of soul satisfaction when they have celebrated a magic moment by sharing it -- and maybe even by helping to create it.

The magic moment of saying the vows.
The magic moment of first crossing the finish line.
The magic moment of twilight making the mountaintops shine.
The magic moment of the reflections in the windows.

A high-end photographer has multiple copies of his or her equipment.

More than one lens. If they all work today, they provide a variety of perpsectives. If one fails, another one will make it possible to keep on capturing the magic.

More than one body. If they all work today, they provide trade-offs such as image quality versus low light capacity, of full control versus speed of shooting. If one fails, another one will save the day.

Extra batteries, preloaded into battery packs.

And yet, it all comes down to one bottleneck. One constraint that can't kill the magic of the moment, but that can destroy the magic momento we call a photograph.

The whole day's work, with ten thousand dollars worth of redundant equipment, can be for naught with the failure of a $20 component.

This is a problem. The solution is a feature. The security, peace of mind and certainty that the magic is conserved are the benefits.

I'll make a follow up post tomorrow explaining the solution.

Meanwhile, you can ask: wouldn't a photographic equipment ad that discusses the magic be likely to reach the spirits of photographers, inspiring them to want to read more?

Meanwhile, you can ask: what is the magic that inspires the heart of your customers and stirs their souls?
