SEO – A gap Analysis: ‘Why SEO is important’.

Posted 04-26-2009 at 10:05 PM by Amanti Code

“Bridging the gap between
online consumers
and online businesses.”

In 1998 The Georgia Institute of Technology tracked how web users found websites. According to their survey 85% of web users found information via [search engines]. In a more recent survey, conducted in 2000 by Forrester Research, 81% of UK web users found websites also via [search engines].

Figure 1.1 shows the three major search engines used world wide are Google™ (49.2%), Yahoo!™ (23.8%) and Microsoft Search Network (MSN) now Microsoft Live™ (9.6%). Due to such research data, large corporations and medium to small sized businesses are discovering the power of search engines and the importance of ranking highly within them for popular search terms and keyword phrases.

Very little information on how search engines work is released into the public. A very select number of people around the world really understand the importance of seo and the powerful concept of search engine (SE) rankings and keyword targeting. They understand the precise strategies of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). In fact to further emphasize the importance of SEO, a study conducted by NPD Group, recorded users retrieving information from search engines and found, the top 30 results on the search page will get over 90% of search traffic and the top 10 results are likely to receive over 80% more traffic than the results listed between 11–30.

Figure 2.1 of Google’s “Heat Map” image supports these statistics illustrating the eye and mouse activity of users’ when conducting search on Google’s SE. In terms of New Zealand (NZ) internet user activity, according to Zenago.co.nz 80% of the population (14+) access the internet at least once per month.

Why are these statistics important? Why is SEO important? Taking into consideration these statistics the current gap between online businesses more specifically NZ online businesses and search engines is becoming a more challenging issue. Gone are the days that a business would get a website developed, uploaded to the web and magically found by users (potential customers). The growing number of websites providing limitless information can easily describe any other website as a “needle in a haystack” scenario. How do businesses (i.e. e-commerce and service related sites) get users to find their website? In other words drive traffic and get conversions? The gap in the market is the missing link between websites (e-commerce, content driven, lead generating, etc.) and search engine rankings, resulting in targeted web traffic. The equation is simple: [SEO + website + targeted web traffic = more sales = increased revenue].

The gap dynamics:
The truly unique aspect of a website is that virtually everything is measurable; this means that websites that incorporate data gathering analytical software can measure the performance of their website by testing virtually every aspect of the page layout and content to optimise for best conversion performance. Considering such sophisticated tools, judged by analytical measurements and user surveys, it is confident that the gap is frequently opening and growing.
