If you are an affiliate marketer and have spent few months building your affiliate business then you already know that "The Money Is In the List." This is not a cliche, this is a fact. Thousands of people online have found this as the best way to build any online business.

First-time visitors seldom make a purchase. Some online studies suggest that less than 1% visitors make a purchase on their first visit to any offer. That is the trouble most affiliate marketers face. Unless you have 4 to 5 points of contact it is very difficult to get a sale. So resting all your marketing ambitions on the hope that first-time visitors will make a purchase, you're going to have trouble making any money online.

That is a reason to build an Email List. A list of people who visited your website or offer and opted in to get emails from you. Email marketing is a long-term marketing strategy for any Online Business.

What is a lead magnet?

A lead magnet is designed to help you capture the email address of visitors to your website. You can then send emails to these visitors as and when you want. The emails can be spread over free content and promotional content. Thus the lead magnets are designed for the 99% of prospects that leave your site without making a purchase.

So, if you want to gain these email addresses, you should take the time to create an effective lead magnet.

How to create an effective lead magnet?

There are four important things you need to do in order to create an effective lead magnet.

1. Research Your Competitor’s Lead Magnets

Look at the lead magnets in your niche. If you know some of your competitors who are doing well then studying their lead magnets can give interesting insights.

Do not directly copy their offers. But use it as your research to ensure that you're offering something original and more appealing than what your competition is offering.

The research will give you an understanding of your potential buyer. What are their hopes, dreams, desires, and pains? Use this information to design your offer.

2. The Different Types of Lead Magnets.

From your research, you will also see different types of lead magnets offered. Generally, these offers will fall into one of these categories:
  • PDF, eBook, or downloadable guide
  • Video tutorial
  • Webinars
  • Discounts or coupons

The medium that you choose for your offer will depend on your market. PDFs and other readable content are useful when you don’t have a tangible product.

So, if you offer digital goods or services, your customers will expect digital offers. Though, downloadable content can be applied to almost any industry.

When creating your offer, the medium is not nearly as important as the actual content. Whether you film a video tutorial or put together a downloadable guide, you need to choose a topic that your potential buyers are interested in.

3. Researching the Top Concerns of Your Potential Buyers

Do some research on top concerns of your potential buyers. Understand their hopes, dreams, desires, and pain, related to the problem you are solving. That will help you choose the topic for your lead magnet. People are looking for solutions. They want to gain knowledge, related to their problem. Your job is to provide them with the answers they need.

There are several ways to learn more about the top concerns of your target demographic.
  1. Forums & Communities: Look at the questions that people ask most frequently on forums and communities related to your niche. You can find really good understanding from sites like Reddit, Quora, Yahoo Answers etc.
  2. Social Channels: Read the comments and understand the shares of content on social media. Facebook, Youtube has so many people commenting on various things. Find the comments related to your niche and see what people are appreciating or complaining about.
  3. Direct Contact: You can also talk to your friends directly who may be an ideal avatar of your potential customer. You don't need to sell anything to them unless they want it. But you can start listening to their problems. This will give you the best ideas you can apply to your lead magnets.
  4. Keyword Research: Google Trends and Keyword Planner can help a lot. From these and similar tools, you can find out what people are searching for. What are the exact phrases people use online? This is also a very powerful way of uncovering people problems using the data google is collecting daily.

After you’ve researched the top concerns of your potential buyers, you’ll have a topic to discuss. Make this topic the focus of your free content. Then, this content together in a PDF, video, or webinar.

4. Create a Killer Title and Sub-title

Once you have an offer, the rest is easy. You just need a great title and sub-title. Be specific and keep your title simple. Address the problem or concern that you promise to solve in your free content.

The sub-title follows up on this promise by telling visitors what they’ll find on this page. Make it obvious to your visitors what they’re about to read.

This same tip applies to the rest of your web page. Keep the content simple and direct. You need to stick to the point. The entire goal of the page is to get visitors to sign up to your email list by offering free content. Make sure that they understand exactly what they’re about to sign up for.

A lead magnet is an invaluable tool used for growing your email list. But, there are more steps that you can take. If you’d like more powerful marketing tips, as well as a way to generate conversion-ready internet marketing prospects every month, click here to learn about my done-for-you system.
