To avoid serious customer mistakes

You know one way to earn money? Try not to lose it by making a serious mistake. Think of studying your customer database as an insurance policy, one that pays out when you avoid charging a penalty fee to one of your best customers who has made large purchases from you. Learn what is going on inside your company, so you can avoid the situation of two different sales reps calling on the same customer, each one with a different price for the same product. Ouch. And work harder to keep your ongoing revenue by not giving out standard service to premium customers.

At some point you have to ask yourself, how much of this is complicated database technical-speak, and how much of this is pure common sense? Treat your customers well, and use technology to help you accomplish those goals. Do your best to understand all of your customer touch points, including when they make a purchase, when they request a service call, or when they submit an online query, or mail in one of your rebate cards. Go ahead and gather the data, but you must take care to analyze it and gain a complete picture of your customer. Treat them they way they deserve to be treated, avoid committing serious mistakes with their data, and you will be rewarded.
