My first thought on this matter is to discuss style types. From my own experience I've discovered a number of styles.
The first style I'd like to talk about I will call "The Personal Touch". I've found this a very effective approach when your client wants something that talks to the reader. In this style I talk to the reader as I would if we were having a conversation. I personalize myself and the reader. I use "I", "My", "We", "You" and so on. I try to speak from personal experience. A light heart and a well executed, to the point article should make your client happy and content if this is the type article he is looking for.
The second type style I will call "Nothing But the Facts Please". When writing this type article you want short and concise paragraphs followed by a few bullets or numbers per paragraph highlighting essentials pertaining to that paragraph. The introduction should state what you are going to talk about and the conclusion should summarize what you have talked about. Most importantly - stick to the facts. Don't wonder off to opinion or speculation.
A third style I will identify as the "How To". This style basically is written to get across a procedure that will produce the end product being the topic your client wants discussed. In a "How To" you need an introduction that gives information about the subject such as it's history, it's origins, it's development and it's definition. Once that is accomplished you want to describe the materials needed for this project. Once you've listed them it's time to produce the instructions. Both materials and instructions should be identified by bold and underlined copy. Materials should have a bullet per material needed. The instructions should be numbered according to steps. Once this all is accomplished you can simply stop writing. A conclusion is not necessary. Personally I like adding a conclusion because I feel this reinforces the "How To" do ability.
When writing be careful not to use large paragraphs and run-on sentences like I just did. In a blog this is okay but in a professional article this is absolutely unacceptable.
