Creating Email Newsletters - Treat Your List Members As Humans, Not Cows

Posted 02-03-2011 at 07:54 AM by Britt Malka

Creating email newsletters means dealing with a list. You should always keep in mind that your list members are human beings, not cash cows.

Don't you just hate it, when a guru speaks about his list as a cash cow?

It makes you feel like something of very low value, not even a human being. Just somebody who's there to get milked and drained for money by some greedy marketer.

This is not the way to relate to your list, and in the long run, it's not the way to make money from it, either.

People, who subscribe to your list, do so for a reason. This reason is almost always themselves, and not you.

It's always about them, and not about you. Remember, your subscriber will ask himself this question: what's in it for me?

You should answer this question for him, and deliver.

There are several ways, you can show appreciation to your list members for being loyal subscribers.

Speak to them as equals. You might have some knowledge that they don't, but it only means that you're in a position to teach, not to be patronizing.

Your list members are not daft. Treat them like clever persons, and write to them accordingly. There's nothing worse than receiving an email with thick lies inside, like the clicheé of "this offer will be taken down any minute", or "he might just raise the price tomorrow".

We don't believe in these fibs any longer. Why should your reader? And it feels very uncomfortable when people tell you that kind of falsehood, because you're supposed to believe it, yet, you don't.

And when people feel uncomfortable, they'll stop believing in you, and they will unsubscribe from your list.

Put yourself in your reader's place: What would you like to get from being subscribed to your mailing list? What kind of information would you like to read?

You can even go ahead and ask your reader, what he wants to learn more about. You can ask him in an email or make a video with your question. Tell him, exactly how you want him to answer your question. You might have to bribe him to get an answer. You could create a short report to give away. One marketer even gave away gift cards to Amazon to the persons, who answered his questions.

When you receive these answers, you'll have a good idea about what to give, and this is the best way to treat your list members as human beings, and not as cash cows.

Use a reliable auto-responder

When you're creating email newsletters, it's important that you use the best auto-responder possible. Or you risk losing subscribers.

I've tried several, and I've no doubt that AWeber is the best. You can get a free test drive from my blog: Get a Free Test Drive with Aweber
