How To Get A Green Card In 3 Easy Steps

A Green Card is the ability to establish permanent residency in the USA,
Essentially it gives a person the right to;
- Live in any part of the US and move freely in the US
- Work in any employment (as long as they are licenced to perform the duties involved for some jobs)
- Travel in and out of the US freely
- Access some social benefits
- Apply for US Citizenship after a period of 3-5 years depending on their nature of the Green Card
One of the ways many people get a Green Card or Permanent Residency is marrying a US citizen but as this article is not about finding your true love or otherwise, we will leave this pathway for now.
Also there is the Diversity Visa or Green Card Lottery which is also not the focus of this article given the luck involved.
1. Get Educated - If you don't have at least a Bachelor's Degree it becomes really difficult to get to the US to work or in any other capacity where a Green Card is a realistic possibility. If you get a US Masters degree, although costly, it increases your chances greatly of getting an H-1B visa to work
2. Understand US Employers & Get A Job - If you were educated outside the US, a good initial foray into the US is doing an internship with a US company on a J-1 visa. If you were educated within the US for Undergraduate or Masters, then use your OPT time at a US Employer. Either of these actions both give you direct access to a US employer who may hire you themselves. Finally it gives you time in the US to apply and adjust to the US way of life.
3. Impress Your Employer Beyond Any Possible Expectation - If you show genuine interest, care and enthusiasm for the work you do, matched with a overall desire to succeed, you will impress your employer to the point that they will be more than happy to sponsor your Green Card.
