Google Places listing for business is less about tricks and more about systematic math. In many cases, when someone puts out a Google Places guide, they mean well and they mean to help other marketers. Oddly, there are not many guides on how to do a Yahoo Places listing, which is relevant here. Yahoo has shifted many times in how it executes this; and so it does not make sense to follow a guide. But the fact of the matter is the same is true about A Google Places listing. The sand shifts every day. That said, there is a surefire way not to get caught in a trap for your client that you can't get out of.
At one time, it was fun to see a business or a house in a Google Earth listing. One had the sense that there was an alternative motive on behalf of Google. What we didn't know is what that would come to mean to business. A Google Maps listing (or Google Places) properly done can yield multiple benefits to a Small Business owner. This is different from he or she having a Google Based website (Called Google Pages). Listing a business there only means that you have a business website. A Google Sites listing does not necessarily put you on the map even though it is free from Google. A Google Local listing though, which is placement of the offline consultant's client on the maps will secure their share of the business.
