“Chip Tarver on Courage in Marketing”
By Chip Tarver
This is not your run-of-the-mill article you would normally expect from a 'marketer.'
But this has been on my heart today, so I thought I'd write this article, which I hope helps you (and me.) First - let's see what 'courage' is "supposed" to be.
'Courage' - according to Dictionary.com:
1. n. - The state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution; bravery.
2. n - a quality of spirit that enables you to face danger of pain without showing fear [syn: courageousness, bravery] [ant: cowardice]
And - what about 'courageous?'
1. adj. - Having or characterized by courage; valiant.
2. adj - possessing or displaying courage; able to face and deal with danger or fear without flinching; "Familiarity with danger makes a brave man braver but less daring"- Herman Melville; "a frank courageous heart; triumphed over pain"- William Wordsworth; "set a courageous example by leading them safely into and out of enemy-held territory" [syn: brave, fearless] [ant: cowardly]
Now - how does this apply to you, and me, and marketing?
I've had a few rough years… the wreck in February 2005, my appendix out last summer, someone trying twice to steal my car, my Step Mom dying recently, and other things I won't even mention here.
I guess sometimes I wonder if it's all even worth the effort…
Ever feel like everyone and everything is fighting you at every turn? Ever get to the point that you start to expect 'dread' instead of joy? What's the issue THIS WEEK going to be? What's going to pull the rug out from under me THIS WEEK?
Well - if we understand and embrace that 'you can never lose till you quit' - we have to come up with some plan that will work for us.
Me?
I try to do my best to trust God and believe that He has a plan for me. But, like these days, when I'm in the valley between the glorious mountain-tops, sometimes I wonder if He's still there.
But He said He'd never leave me or forsake me.
So I have to believe that He is.
This current situation of mine has given new meaning to the verse where He says, "My grace is sufficient." I had read it many times, but frankly never fully understood it before now.
So, the way I deal with all this crazy stuff is to just 'hang on.' I try not to give up. I look for small joys among the junk of daily life.
I try to associate with people I enjoy. I'm not much of a friend these days, I guess. I try to be good to people, but ask nothing in return. I don't seem to have 'the patience' for people these days.
I try to find fulfillment being in the music ministry at Church.
I try to smile at people, when all I really feel like doing is frowning.
There are few things left in this life I enjoy as much as playing music. I used to love to listen to music, too, but that's subsided.
But (so far) I haven't quit. It brings to mind the song from "Annie" that says "The sun will come out tomorrow - bet your bottom dollar ...'
So, today and other days - I keep looking for the sun to come out. I don't quit. I can't say that I know what's coming - but I refuse to quit.
I don't expect miracles from myself, and I don't expect things to be magically perfect - I just keep on keepin' on, hangin’ on to Grace.
The only advice I can offer you as part of this article is to trust God. If He's not in your life, perhaps consider letting Him in. Your liger and your marketing will markedly improve straight away.
The other advice is just "don't quit."
"The sun will come out tomorrow. Bet your bottom dollar." So be encouraged today. I'm sure going to try...
You decide.
