How To Split Test Landing Pages

There was a guy on the forum recently who made a great sales page but did not get many conversions.
His first mistake was in not testing first with some traffic that should convert. His traffic was coming from complete unknown sources so no surprise at low conversions (probably junk traffic).
He was thinking of creating an email list to increase conversions. I told him he needed to check the conversion of the sales page first.
Here is what I suggested he do:

I think you first need to see how the sales page converts on its own.
This way, when you start to list build and track those sales, you can see if you convert better than without it (a list can even make conversion go down if done wrong!).
I suggest making three versions of the sales page but with three different headlines. Keep these separate from the page that your affiliates are currently sending to.
Put them into Google Website Optimizer to do an A/B/C split test and then send article marketing traffic. You'll figure out the conversion data AND you'll also discover which of the three converts the best. As we're only changing the headline, you'll still know if you have to change the meat of the sales page or not.
Later, you can switch the article traffic to your list or wherever.
