Domain Name Matching Your Keywords? - Necessary Or Not?

Posted 06-25-2010 at 05:10 PM by Chris Kent

This is the second time I've seen this question pop up on the forum in two days. Should your domain name match your keywords?

i.e. does your domain need to contain your main site keyword (and yes, almost any site should be optimised for a single keyword, it's free traffic if you fully exploit it) or does it really not matter.

Here is my response on this:

No, you don't have to. But I recommend it.

If you are planning on creating a huge long term site and will brand it strongly, maybe personally, then I do recommend a catchy, brandable name. Forget about keywords from an SEO point of view and concentrate only on a catchy name.

Otherwise, I'm assuming you want to focus on SEO. Then you should get a keyword based domain. It is definitely worth the extra effort of looking for one. Personally, I am expanding massively into low competition niches where often you can rank high with just a domain name and a single backlink to get you indexed!
Hope you found it useful. If anything is not clear or you have a comment, please leave one below

Best,
Chris
