Conficker Worm to Activate on April Fool’s Day

The Conficker C worm is no joke.
As we have discussed here before, the worm is spreading fast - it’s already infected between 5 million and 10 million computers. Microsoft is even offering a $250,000 reward to anyone who can stop it.
Now, a group of anti-worm researchers have teamed up to form a group they call the Conficker Cabal. The group is attempting to hunt down the malicious program’s creator and looking for ways to do damage control.
“We love catching bad guys,” said Alvin Estevez, CEO of Enigma Software Group, one of the many organizations trying to stop Conficker C. “We’re like former hackers who like to catch other hackers. To us, we get almost a feather in our cap to be able to knock out that worm. We slap each other five when we’re killing those infections.”
So far, the infection hasn’t done too much damage, but all of that could change on April 1st. On April Fool’s Day, a master computer is expected to take over the infected machines, said Don DeBolt, director of threat research for CA, a New York IT company.
