Around the 15th century when traders where looking for a convenient way to reach Asia, a visionary Italian navigator Christopher Columbus proposed the idea of reaching Asia by sailing west. Columbus sailed for Asia and after a long voyage of over two months, finally landed on to the then unknown American Continent. Today Columbus Day is celebrated on every second Monday of October, to mark the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival to Americas.
History of Columbus Day in United States of America
The history of celebrating Columbus Day in USA goes back to the year 1792, when New York City celebrated the 300th anniversary of the discovery of Americas. Subsequently, the celebrations on this occasion were again held in 1892 after a call from the then president Benjamin Harrison to honor the 400th anniversary of the event. Since then, every state has its own history of celebrating the occasion.
A Genoese lawyer from California is often accredited for popularizing Columbus Day as a holiday in USA. The lawyer then moved to Colorado where he organized first-ever statewide celebration of Columbus Day in 1907. Finally, on the request of Knights of Columbus, US president Franklin D. Roosevelt declared 12 October as an official holiday. In 1971, President Nixon announced every second Monday of October as the Columbus Day in US. Incidentally the same day is observed as ‘Thanksgiving Day’ in Canada. All the major institutions such as banks, schools, bond market, postal services, etc, remain closed on this day.
Columbus Day in Modern USA
Columbus Day holds a huge significance in modern America. The day is not only observed as an official holiday in the US but it also serves as a matter of pride for its citizens. The day infuses sense of unity among various communities and different states celebrate the event in their own characteristic way. Few of these notable celebrations are discussed below:
• “Denver Parade” – Denver observes a commemorating parade on the occasion of Columbus Day. Despite protests from some Native American groups for two decades, Denver has successfully carried on the decades’ long tradition of Columbus Day Parade in Denver city.
• “Discoverer’s Day” in Hawaii – On second Monday of each October, Hawaii honors both Christopher Columbus and British navigator James Cook; who reckoned the coordinates of Hawaiian island. The day also been interpreted as commemoration of all the discoveries in ancient and Modern Hawaii.
• “Native American Day” in South Dakota – South Dakota observes an official holiday on second Monday of October and preferably calls it “Native American Day”, instead of Columbus Day.
• Boston Parade – The city of Boston organizes a parade, a day before the Columbus Day between North End and East Boston.
