THE SCIENCE OF LIFE AND CREATIVITY.
1.1. THE CREATIVE MIND.
The 21st century is the thinkers’ world, with minds that make the planet mars habitable to man. The world has witnessed the most challenging moment in recent times. There is constant downsizing or organizational re-engineering and high rate of unemployment, yet those with ideas and skills catch the attention and advantage of the world and are never downsized or declared redundant.
I think the economy of today has shifted from an Industrial one to a more “Creative Economy” which relies heavily on ideas, management skills and technical prowess of some creative wizards. People have become the most important resources and assets of this century and the appreciation of this will help determine one’s own total success, financial freedom, influence and significance.
The creative thinkers all over the world have suddenly become those who wield power and influence, the power brokers and the most listened to just by their seed of innovative ability to perform a particular task with excellence. Companies and corporations that will survive this century are those that attract, retain, organized and managed by these unimaginable creative minds as workforce.
I want to emphasize on this so that you can search your mind and join the train to blow the world ahead. However, you will need to develop certain qualities paramount among which are INTEGRITY ANDDETERMINATION. To be frank with you, the science of life will attempt to draw you behind mainly to train you up and watch how your reaction will be to the lessons of life and more so to prepare you for the wonderful future ahead. Mind you, the training of life is irrespective of anybody and is never fair to anyone. That is why Emerson said “Guard your integrity as a sacred thing, nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.” The basic factors here are: “MIND INTEGRITY:= INNOVATIVE CREATIVITY” and “CHARACTER:= HOPEFUL DETERMINATION”.
There is always a BIG DREAM in all the VICTORS of the world, the big dream to be the best in whatever field they choose as focus. The Bible admonishes to do with unreserved strength, whatsoever our hands find to do. We just have to carry the mentality of a victor, to maximize and bring out the best despite any CHANGES.
According to Dr. Martin Luther King Jnr:
“If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, go on out and sweep street like Michael Angelo carved marble, sweep street like Raphael painted pictures, sweep street like Beethoven composed music and sweep street like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep street so well that the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say, here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job so well. If you cannot be a pipe on the top of a hill, be a scrub in the valley but be the best little scrub on the side of the rail. Be a bush if you cannot be a tree. If you cannot be a highway, just be a trail. If you cannot be the sun, be a star. For it is not by size that we win or fail. Just be the best of whatever you are.”
There is opportunity in everything around us, it all depends on how we see or look at every situation. We just must see with our MIND-SIGHT rather than just our EYE-SIGHT. Everything will look so ordinary in our sight but in the mind, they are precisely extraordinary. Just as Dei Tumi explained, “There lived a blind man in a small village who always engage others in public discussion. Whenever a point is explained to his full understanding he would exclaimed, ‘oh I see, I see your point’! Out of curiosity, a little boy asked him one day why he would always say ‘I see’ when precisely he could not see physically. The man was quoted thus: ‘It is not true that I cannot see. Actually, I cannot look at things like others but as far as seeing, I can see. I see with my mind and even if you focus very intensely on anything, until when your mind tells and shows you ways to understand the issue of life, you may only be looking.” Such also is the eyes of the world, IF ANYMAN IS TO EXCELL, HE MUST SEE LIFE WITH THE EYES OF THE MIND, that is CREATIVITY!!
1.2. THE SCIENCE OF LIFE.
There are no short cuts in the success journey. You cannot identify success by rushing through life. That is not possible without crushing your dream and your integrity. Life is a long-run program and it will amount to a “Mixmatch” to look for a short cut in solving the long-term issues life.
Life is essentially full of surprises, contradictions and changes. It is full of puzzles and paradoxes. We are pushed around by circumstances on a daily basis. Nevertheless, if we understand the language of life, we will turn things around and use the situation to our advantage. “Life can best be understood backward, but has to be lived forward” says Charles Handy. Also according to Dr. Mensah Otabil “Every champion focuses on where he is going to, only fool focuses on where he is coming from.” True riches is hidden and not easily come by, to gather wealth requires salient wisdom and experience from the day-to-day lessons of life. If you will not rush but wait to complete the ‘course’, you will definitely succeed.
Everything in life is created to succumb to pressure. Some people, when you squeeze them, they fold, some freeze while some simply melt away. It all depends on individual personal reaction. Bishop David Oyedepo says “The greater the destiny, the stiffer the opposition.” It is important to note that in today’s economy, the ‘SMART’ ones are those who understand the mentorship lesson of life.
MENTOR means a wise and trusted counselor, teacher or adviser. A mentor can give you the wisdom of a life-time experience. Mentoring is a precise short cut toward experience, wisdom and full understanding of an adventure you have never undertaken in life. Your mentor therefore comes in handy to teach you as you struggle through disappointment and appointment, rejection and acceptance and so on to the total mastery of situation.
I hope you know that mentorship is a concept, not necessarily an individual. That is why I will talk on such example as the mentorship of life.
1.3. THE SERENDIPITOUS MENTORSHIP.
This is the kind of lessons you learn accidentally from encounters and situation you never planned or prepared for, and of course which you have no control over. If you are open-minded, you will learn a great deal of secret from practical situations and encounters, knowing that all such lessons have the potential for mentorship. Such mentors are not necessarily human It can be anything that compels you to alter your way of life or change your believe about life.
A great lesson I have discovered in life is that, at virtually every point in life, as someone is standing there to stop you, harm you or bring you down, someone else is expecting to receive and help you. That is exactly the same for every situation of life we find ourselves. No matter how horrible an encounter is, there will definitely be an end to the turmoil. They are all therefore an agent of change, training, mentoring and experience.
Serendipitous experience could be destructive. It had led to the death of many that are not very lucky. Some never lived to share their serendipitous account. Sometimes it is hard to believe when people share their ‘testimony’ but that is the reality, just that they experience it all alone and that is called THE LESSON OF NATURE.
The successful individuals have a fighting spirit. They do not allow life to push them into submission. Instead, they see such challenges as training opportunities and therefore push back at life by developing fresh commitment to their dream and ambition, learning new skills every day. The fools on the other hand react to people around them. They become ‘toxic’ to their wife, brothers and neighbors instead of the challenge that is all waiting to be conquered. The truth is, if you will refuse to let your spirit be captured, you will learn a great deal of lesson from life. Abraham Lincoln said after losing one of the senate elections, “My foot slipped from under me but I recovered and said to myself, it was a slip and not a fall.” Truly he rose up and after several failures; he eventually rose up to become an American President.
In relation to struggle and achievement, it is painted that the elevator to the top of the tower of achievement is most times faulty and out of order. For that, one has to make use of the staircase, that is, ONE STEP AFTER THE OTHER to get to the top all the same. It will definitely be strenuous and time-taking but will equally be full of experience on how tall is the tower, the stress of climbing and the consciousness of not coming down again, only such people know what it takes to get to the top. That does not mean that is the only route to the top anyway. There are others who are the so-called “HIGH FLIERS.” Their story could sound the best of achievement but their lesson and experience is never the most rooted ones.
1.4. THE HELEN KELLER STORY.
Let us briefly motivate ourselves with the heroic story of Helen Keller, who fought against all odds of life and won as celebrity. Can you imagine being born deaf and dumb? Can you imagine growing up as a young girl and later not being able to see the face of your parent or hear them as they try to speak to you? Or can you imagine wanting to express feeling to your loved ones and yet hindered by your inability to get words out? That was the situation in which Helen Keller found herself at the age of seven.
Aside all obstacle of life, she inspired millions of people all over the world She was quoted to have written thus:
“They took away what should have been my eyes, but I remember Milton’s paradise.
They took away what should have been ears but Beethoven came and wipes away my tears.
They took away what should have been my tongue, but I had talked to God when I was young. He would not let them take away my soul. And I know, possessing that, I still possess the whole world.”
You can see, in spite of all her predicament, Helen Keller harbored no regret or resignation. She eventually controlled and owned her world and her destiny. She might have lost her SIGHT but never lost her VISION. Even though, there are no records of the value of her financial wealth, she is well known and greatly revered in the corridors of power for her commitment to VISION. Till today, royalties are still accruing from Helen Keller’s work. The future is either purchased or sold off by the choices we make from the challenges of today.
Let me conclude by saying that nothing makes you look even like a TRIER when you eventually fail in the pursuance of your Goal. YOU ARE NOTHING BUT JUST A GLORIFIED FAILURE! You see, when you face a target, you simply contend with two things: the strength, effort and task to work it out on one hand and an invisible oppositional force to ensure you fail. The only end-story is either you fail, or succeed, that entirely depends on you.
If you are the type who knows that the brighter the glory, the stiffer the opposition, YOU WILL STRIFE TO SUCCEED AND NOT FAIL! The Bible says in the book of 1 Corinthians, chapter 10, verse 13.”There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”(KJV)
You will see that the world operates by procedures and pattern and that I tagged, THE SCIENCE OF LIFE AND CREATIVITY. Having known this, you will prepare your mind to succeed in whatever you intend to do. If your intention is worthwhile, you will definitely be opposed because, anything valuable is equally attractive to many. If you will endure and complete the course of life, YOU WILL DEFINITELY COME OUT VICTORIOUS!!!
