One simply change to my blog and my spam levels have disappeared

I have been planning a new blog product that I will be selling in a few weeks time and as I was making it I was thinking very hard about my own blogs. Just like many other people I have all these blog plugins and settings that just don’t get used at all. They have been installed because someone said I needed them and it has gone from there.
The blog was originally set up by an outsourcer from Brazil, therefore I didn’t need to go through all the simple little settings that are part of my wordpress blog. But recently I have been exploring my blog in much more detail.
I have found it really interesting how much there is to learn from my blog and deleted any rubbish that I no longer need as there is no point keeping it all.
One thing that has been annoying me of late has been the amount of spam that I have been getting.
Even for blog posts that I have written six to twelve months ago. Then I noticed that you can change it so that once a blog post is old people can no longer leave a comment.
[B]The big question is how old?[/B]
At first I thought that this would put off new customers because I get a lot of traffic to old posts through SEO methods. But then I looked through who was posting on my Blog and posts that are more than a month old was more or less covered by spammers.
I therefore altered my blog to stop commenting on blog posts that are a month old or older and my spam has totally dropped. It was amazing how many comments are now real ones and I no longer have to worry about the spam again!
If you would like to do the same and reduce your spam levels visit settings > discussion:
Then click on the “automatically close comments on posts that are more than ….days old”. Then decide how old you want the blog posts to be when you close the comments feature on them.
