Thank you for returning to our Internet Marketing Blog. To be the first to hear about updates please subscribe.
I have been reading through a Blog this week called Report Online Scams about the huge scams that we are all facing in internet marketing today that has been put together by someone that lost his whole business and nearly sank because of it. I have also had my own horror story that happened to me in the August of 2005 and for the first time I am revealing all on his Blog as a guest Blogger. You can click here to read it.
But firstly before you read it I would like to share with you my 5 killer tactics for avoiding internet marketing scams:
1. Phlishing scams – if you are unaware of phlishing what it means is you receive an email from a company pretending to be someone else. The whole purpose of it is to either gain sensitive information or to spread viruses onto your computer. The messages often come with a bad standard of English which can mean that you can spot them a mile off.
The most recent ones that I have received has been from someone that claimed to have failed to deliver my goods and asked me to open an attachment with the order details so that I can re-schedule the order. Then once you open the attachment after downloading it you will be infected with Trojan Horse which is the worst internet virus available today!
If you are in doubt simply ignore them!
2. The PayPal Scam – This is a serious issue if you are a seller of goods across the internet and has effected me many times over the years. I have bought many products through PayPal mainly because I am a regular buyer on eBay and they offer some amazing goods especially if you are a bargain hunter.
Now what PayPal fails to point out unless you read through their very long terms and conditions is that if as a seller you send out an item to a buyer via normal post if it goes missing the seller will have to pay up. As PayPal will only refund it if full tracking information is provided otherwise they will automatically agree with the buyer.
This has opened the doors up to PayPal fraud as what people do is open a new bank account just for PayPal, pay for goods, take delivery, request a refund, receive a refund and then close down the bank account. To stop this from happening to you I strongly suggest that you use recorded delivery for when you are sending out items to your customers.
3 – Paid online Survey’s – This is the biggest scam I have ever come across on the internet and it gets many people everyday online. People search everyday for survey sites to make money online and the scamers take full advantage of this. People want to make money online and by offering this service they can reel them in.
The truth is that you can make money from surveys but the actual figure to expect is a lot lower than what you will have been quoted. The average earnings from taking part in surveys is $20 a week from doing 24 hours a week. Then because the surveys are from different sites you would have to work a year before you have access to any of your money.
4 - Brand new business for a low fee – There are many sites out there that offer you a business in a box for about $1,000 but when you look further into you will find that the products that they are offering you are three years old and has no sales value. If you are new to internet marketing you will find out that it is working against you pretty quick. They pray on newcomers to internet marketing that don’t know how to set up a website and I see people falling for this on a daily basis.
5 – The Money Back Guarantee – We all feel better buying a product when it comes with a personal money back guarantee as it gives us piece of mind. However this money back guarantee can set up two scams from the same promise. The first is from sellers that post that they have a money back guarantee even though they don’t. It’s just so that they can get your business but have no intention of paying out on it. Because most of them sell their goods through PayPal you are not entitled to a refund for ebooks or other downloadable goods so it means that you have no rights.
Secondly people will buy your products only because you have a guarantee on your website and will plan to request a refund as soon as they have got the product in their possession even though they haven’t even read it or given it a chance.
These are my 5 top scams on the internet at the moment and be very cautious so that you are not a victim yourself. Now go and have a good read of my story so that you don’t lose out like I did. It nearly saw the end of me in internet marketing it was that bad.
