3 Ways To Improve Your Twitter Popularity

Ahhhh Twitter.
Is it all the rage or just a bunch of hype?
Whatever you decide I have watched it grow from 1 million to over 2 million accounts in under 90 days. Granted, all these accounts may be created by the same person with little more to do than watching grass grow – but I don’t think so.
As such, I personally mark Twitter as the rage that people say it is. That’s why I’d like to share 3 ways to improve your Twitter popularity with you because the more we all understand Twitter the more popular it will indeed become.
#1 “RT”
The Twitter world is a world where you grow by helping other people. I know, it’s strange, but think of what the world would be like if this were the rule rather than the exception. One of the biggest ways to help other people is to look for good posts that they have written and RT or retweet them out to your own followers.
How you do this depends on the application you are using. My preference for this activity is TweetDeck, others use Seismic, and still others simply use Twitter. What tool you use is your choice, the important part is the end result.
Here’s a tweet I found on my friend Margie’s account:
My gift 2 U - register 4 Trip of a lifetime - please RT thnx #mmwanted
@Basarabadd
NOTE: I’ve heard that asking people to RT is frowned upon. However, I think it’s okay as long as you don’t ask for an RT on each and every post you make.
Now, if I were to RT this post it would look like this.
RT @Basarabadd My gift 2 U - register 4 Trip of a lifetime http://bit.ly/14h4e - please RT thnx #mmwanted
NOTE: Some apps like TweetDeck allow you to shorten the URL which is good as Twitter only allows you to send out 140 character posts. Therefore, my link and Margie’s link are exactly the same link minus the shortening exercise.
#2 “#”
It may be strange to think that a simple “#” sign can be so valuable, but indeed it can. Referring to the previous example we see that Margie used a #mmwanted at the end of her post. With this technique, anyone who searches Twitter for “mmwanted” will find her posts among all the others that are listed. As her posts ages it is replaced by newer and newer posts that are using the “#” sign with the keyword of “mmwanted”.
Another way to use the pound sign is to put it before any keywords that focus on what you are trying to connect with people about.
In my case I would create a post that included a “#” also known as a hashtag put on worlds like…
#eat
#healthy
#chocolate
Also, you can write a post which includes your location and hashtag that. Here’s an example of that…
Chocolate can be #healthy #Spokane. Find out more Tuesday's at 7PM in the Sapphire Room (1003 E. Trent Ave) tell em @BodyByChocolates sent U
Another way to use hashtags “#” is to get involved with events that promote other people like…
#FollowFriday
#FollowOrSwallow
#WickedWednesday
#3 “@”
The @ sign tells you who a particular post was created by. However, you can use this symbol to say thank you to several people at once.
For example, let’s say 5 people RT’d Margie’s post that I referenced above. Margie can choose to just ignore such things or recognize them for the value that they are and say thank you. If she said thank you to all 5 people individually it could take a great deal of time. That’s why you will frequently see posts like
Thanks for the RT @Username1 @Username2 @Username3 @Username4 @Username5
Be sure to look at the bios of each RT’r. Perhaps you can strike up a valuable conversation from that information that would be beneficial to the both of you or perhaps your entire Twitter audience.
If you combine the “@” together with the “#” you may find some very valuable results.
For example, let’s say that it is time for #FollowFriday. Your post would look like this.
These people are great to follow on #FollowFriday @Username1 @Username2 @Username3
CONCLUSION:
I’m still learning new ways to enhance my Twitter experience. However, what I have learned above has indeed helped my @BodyByChocolate account grow in some huge ways. Therefore, I would conclude that if you use these 3 ways to improve your Twitter popularity you too will find out why Twitter is indeed all the rage that it is.
