Starting a blog can be a quick or long process depending on the method or hosting company you choose to start it. Below I will give you a quick over view of how it can be done in steps quickly and then give you a more detailed explanation below, with links to relevant helpful articles. Its free, wont cost you nothing, just my time to write this!

Yes wordpress is free software, you just need to pay to get a hosting account!

In short here is the process you will follow:
1. Step 1ecide what to blog about. If you're part of a business, company or organization, this step will be easy to determine. ...
2. Step 2: Choose a blogging platform
3. Step 3: Find a host
4. Step 4: Pick a domain name
5. Step 5: Install WordPress
6. Step 6: Design & use your blog!
Blog or weblog can be described as a personal journal or diary wherein one can share their thoughts and other information to the outside world. It consists of entries, known as posts that appear in reverse chronological order with the most recent entry appearing first.

The quick way will have to be- choosing a webhost that provides 1 click install of wordpress, check out this step by step guide over here to start a blog quickly
There are many factors involved in making a blog which includes - Domain, blogging platform, themes, and plugins.

Domain Name
The first step towards making of blog is choosing a domain. Domain is the url that will lead people to ones blog. A unique and descriptive domain name will attract lots of people. After selecting an appropriate domain name its extension needs to be decided which can be .com, .net, .org, etc. Punctuations, except dashes, cannot be used while creating a domain name.

In case of WordPress, domain can be either nameoftheblog.wordpress.com (if the user opts for free service) or nameoftheblog.com (if the user opts for Self-hosted ones).Tumblr on the other hand is free so name will be like nameoftheblog.tumblr.com. The process of buying and setting up own domain name cannot be done directly from Tumblr interface but can be done via a domain registrar.

Web host
A web host is required in order to have a blog. It is software used for posting the contents in the form of blog onto the internet.

WordPress has officially recommended BlueHost as its host provider based on its quality of service. Users can either avail a free one or choose a paid one depending upon their goals or requirements and can get many features unlike Tumblr which offers limited features.

WP Plugin
Plugin is software that acts as an add-on to a web browser and provides additional functionalities. For example: Macromedia Flash Player, a plugin that allows the web browser to display animations using the Flash format.

There are varieties of wordpress plugins which can be used for showcasing photos, videos, promoting products and so on. A blogger can use variety of plugins to make their blog more eye-catching.

WordPress has more than 20,000 plugins which users can access and use accordingly. WordPress not only allows its users to install the plugins but also to customize it. Tumblr does not provide any access to Plugins thereby not allowing the user to add any functionality.

WP Themes
Themes are used for designing a blog and making it look good and professional.

WordPress is equipped with numerous set of themes some of which are free and some premium. WordPress Directory offers many free themes and Array, Genesis, etc offers commercial themes. SEO friendly themes are the highlight of WordPress. Moreover customizations of themes are simpler. Tumblr has decent range of different free and premium design themes.

Customizations of themes are a bit complex compared to that of WordPress. Moreover its themes are not much appealing.

Blogs have become quite common in 2016. Many of them just started it just for fun but turned out to be popular. Before starting a blog one should be clear about the goals that they want to achieve by creating a blog. If it is for professional use then opting self-hosted ones will be appropriate.

Choosing WordPress or Tumblr ultimately depends upon the user. Some of the blogs that uses WordPress include TechCrunch, VentureBeat, Smashing Magazine, etc. Examples of Tumblr include ifpaintingscouldtext, whitemenwearinggoogleglass, oldloves, etc.

Tumblr is more sought of a social media platform rather than a blogging one. If both are compared then WordPress comes out with flying colours because of its variety of features and flexibility towards numerous functions
