Personal Development Plans Have No Value ... Unless...
Personal development plans have no value ... unless you apply the steps and techniques that are part of the plan. It’s like they say: Knowledge is not power. Applied knowledge is power.
In his training materials, Brian Tracy often elaborates on various “steps to success” that have worked in his life and in the lives of countless others who have learned and applied his recommendations.
A key concept that he tries to drive home is the importance of self discipline and time management. “Self discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not,” says Brian.
This concept can be applied to the personal development plans you review, but fail to follow up on. The problem many people have with such plans is that they require the person to change some of their habits and work on developing new ones. That takes commitment, effort and in some cases, a degree of sacrifice.
If you are struggling in this area of self-improvement, then perhaps you need to better clarify your purpose, your goals and the steps you have to take to get you there. I have found that when I don’t have these elements defined clearly enough, I lose focus and momentum and my enthusiasm and motivation begin to lag. Maybe you are the same.
Brian has a formula that he calls the Seven Steps to Success. If you have any of his materials, you may already be familiar with the steps. They include such things as deciding what you want, setting deadlines, organizing your priorities and doing something every day to move you closer to the goal. Of course, his materials provide more thorough explanations and examples.
The key elements to the formula are clarifying what you want and taking daily action. Everything else is built around those elements. However, to make it all work and to give power to your plan, you need to first be disciplined in your daily routines and you need to work at improving your time management skills.
If your purpose and your goals are worthy, you will find a way to do what is necessary to get focused and on track with your personal development plans.
