How Search Engines Work
There is no simple explanation of how search engines work, but we can take a brief look at the three main processes involved.
Keep in mind that search engines typically take into consideration millions of factors during the course of their normal operations.
The first process is Crawling. Search engines crawl the Internet looking for new web pages and updated pages. Once found, these pages get added to the search engine index. Dead links are also added to the index.
The crawling process involves complicated algorithms that, as most active Internet Marketers know, get modified regularly and without notice.
The second process is Indexing. A lot of information, collected during the crawl, gets added to the index. This information will include all the words on a web page and their positioning, plus other attributes, including information about the ALT tags, TITLE tags and other page elements.
The third process is Serving. This means serving the results when somebody enters a search term into the search engine. The search engine digs through the index to find relevant web pages likely to be of interest and value to the searcher. The relevancy of a particular result can be influenced by hundreds of factors.
Many of us take for granted how search engines work, but it really is quite an elaborate and amazing process. This short blog post barely touches the surface.
