My Thoughts on Creating a Social Networking Site

Resources are available to help an enthusiastic entrepreneur build their own online social community. Here are a few of my thoughts on creating a social networking site.

First off, it could be a challenge to set up such a community, build its popularity and keep it running, but if you are up to the challenge, I say go for it! Internet Marketing is all about branding yourself as a leader in your field and as the “go to” person for your products and services; what better way to build your brand than to start your own community?

You can find social site scripts online to help you with the technical aspect of it. I would do my due diligence and check out the script providers before choosing the best one. I recommend finding a provider that offers tech support, and choosing a script that you feel capable of installing and administrating.

Decide what features and benefits you want to make available to your members. Common features include member profiles, content sharing abilities, image sharing and video posting. The script you choose will no doubt offer some other options to consider.

The features you choose and the ease that your members will have in using them are very important, but don’t overlook the value of visual appeal as well. One of the biggest challenges you will face is getting members and motivating them to be active. If the site is easy to use and is visually attractive, that will help.

Include time in your weekly schedule for administering the site and for adding new content to keep your members interested, educated and entertained. The more you offer them, and the more frequently you add new things, the better chance you will have of building membership and encouraging existing members to invite their friends and associates.

Once you have the initial bugs out and you have members visiting regularly, you should initiate a promotional campaign to help advertise your new site. Blog about it, post articles about social media in the article directories, talk about it in other social circles and generally get the word out to invite people to take a good look at it.

These have simply been a few of my thoughts on creating a Social Networking site of your own. If the prospect interests you, do some research, make some plans, consider the challenges and responsibilities and then go for it! Like I said, it can be a great way to brand yourself as an expert in your marketing niche.

It does sound like a lot of work. But, many people are OK with a labor intensive project. There are tons of skills necessary to do the administrative jobs. But, for someone who has the skills....there is definitely room for another successful forum on the internet.

Hi, David: Thanks for commenting! Yes, I agree that there is potential for a new site if the creator is committed to doing what has to be done to make it a success. The rewards, as noted in my post, can make it all worth while.
