URL Shorteners

URL Shorteners

Hello, Warriors: (Also posted to GT Bulmer Web Bizz Blog)

Long URLs can be a pain to work with. Here are two URL shorteners that I recommend.

I don’t know about you, but personally I think long URLs look ugly and unprofessional and sometimes they just cause problems because of their length.

There may be circumstances where long URLs are not so obvious and are therefore acceptable. But in places where your customers, prospects or readers do see the URL, a short URL takes up less space and in my opinion, looks much nicer.

There are many URL shorteners on the market. Here are two that I recommend:

1) Turn your long URL into a nuURL with just one click!

Just as the headline suggests, nuURL is quick and easy and best of all, it’s free! If you would also like to track your hits, create custom links and add descriptions, simply register at the nuURL site and you will be able to do those things.

Suppose I wanted to tell you about a news story or an informative article on a website. The URL to the page could be quite long. For example, the one below is 87 characters. Some links are even longer.

http://www.thinkgreen4life.com/envir...fect-everyone/

Using nuURL, I shortenened this 87-character URL down to just 21 characters:

http://nuurl.us/8495e

Visit nuURL right now – nuURL – and try it. Bookmark the page into your “favourites” so you can find it easily when you need it.

2) Make long URLs usable! Create a tiny URL that will not break in email postings.

TinyURL.com will shorten your URL quickly, easily and without any cost. Use the random URL created by TinyURL or create a custom URL of your own choosing.

Using TinyURL, I turned this long URL:

http://www.thinkgreen4life.com/envir...fect-everyone/

...into this:

http://tinyurl.com/dxt5ka

It can be very handy to shorten a long URL; on the Social Networking site, Twitter, for example. On Twitter, you only have 140 characters to work with. You don’t want to use them all up with a long URL. It’s true, Twitter will automatically shorten your long URLs, but only after you enter the long URL and use up all your characters.

Use one of the URL shorteners I have recommended FIRST, then paste the shortened URL into Twitter and you will have plenty of room to post other text.

URL shorteners can help make your posts look much more appealing and professional, whether you post on Twitter, in emails, blogs articles or wherever. Check out nuURL and TinyURL today!

    TinyURL may get blocked

    Hi GT,
Thanks for the post. Didn't know nuURL till now.

One prob with TinyURL is that since it was one of the first around, and is widespread - some spyware/malware detection programs mark this site as a malware site and block it. I guess this is due to many TinyURL links leading to "bad" sites - but it may well be something with tinyurl itself. Regardless of why - this means that some of your readers won't be able to use the link.

To overcome this I normally use metamark.net instead. Sometimes also abe5 but its QOS just isn't up to the mark. Now I'll try nuURL now, per your recommendation.

And... there's a good comparison table of shortening services on notlong Free Short URL Redirection: Sites That Shorten Long URLs . It covers 4 sites - and gives a good idea of what to look for in others.

Interesting read - thanks. I'll definitely head now to your starrbizz blog

    Brad

I have been playing around with alot of these URL shorteners after being a member of a service that did this and went out of business (hard being a 'free service' site I understand). The problem is that I am looking for a place where I can create shortened, or 'hidden' URLs that will forward my users to where I want them to go, and keep count of how many people use the link. Seems like I can't find any free services for that anymore. Maybe I will have to pay to get that job done. I tried some, but they always seem to be lacking somehow and I really need a service like that. Can anyone recommend a good service that will track the clicks?

Eventually I suppose I will have to buy a service that can get this done professionally, but I was just looking for something to use while I am building my site and trying to stay positive (in the 'black' that is).

Thanks for the great comments, everybody! I appreciate the info and additional insight.

Brad, I hear what you are saying about TinyUrl.com - I experienced that with some of my links, too - even shortened links for one of the most reputable online marketing company on the planet (SFI)!

Scott, do you have a service you use to cloak your URL's? I use cloaking software that also tracks the hits. The cloaked link is not short, so what I do is cloak the link first (so I can track the hits), then use one of the URL shorteners. That way, I get the best of both worlds!
