The Web Biz Gravatar: Got Yours yet?

You’ve seen them around the Internet. You’ve probably heard the name and wondered what it is or how it works. You might even have looked into it, but were unsure about following through. I’m talking about the web biz Gravatar. Got yours yet?
Gravatar stands for globally recognized avatar. It is your personal icon or avatar image that, once registered and set up, “follows you” around the Internet. In other words, anywhere you go that is gravatar-enabled and where you sign in or leave a comment, your gravatar will appear along with your user name.
I’ve known about gravatars for a few years, but never made the effort to get mine set up until a few weeks ago. Lately, I’ve been visiting blogs to pick up ideas, leave comments and, in some cases, earn valuable backlinks.
A fair number of blogs are gravatar-enabled and it always annoyed me that some blog commenters had their avatar or profile photo displayed but all I ever got was a silhouette image that made me look like the Unknown Visitor or a missing person. lol
It’s easy to sign up for a gravatar.com account, and it’s free. All you need is an email address.
However, I spent a few days trying to get my gravatar image to appear on enabled sites. I didn’t realize that you had to use the same email address on those sites as the one registered to your gravatar image. Of course it makes sense to me now. But then, I simply thought it was like a membership site where you can sign up with a private email and list a public one for web biz marketing purposes.
The good thing is, once you are registered you can add additional email addresses and link the same or different avatar photos to them. Again, it’s real easy to do. And once you have at least one email address and corresponding image, in very short order you will begin seeing your gravatar on enabled sites.
Personal branding is a big thing in Internet Marketing and setting up a gravatar allows you to develop a consistent, recognizable presence. Wherever you go on gravatar-enabled sites, your image will be the same. If you update your gravatar image for any reason, it automatically updates everywhere it has been posted. Imagine the convenience!
