Last night, my wife and I ravenously tore open our newest Netflix arrivals, and immediately, a blast of nostalgia swept over me. What did I find you ask?
I found Isaac the Bartender, and Gopher the purser. Julie the Cruise Director and of course we can't forget Doc right? Yep, I found myself glued to the comedic-drama known to many in the early 80's as, "The Love Boat".
As we were working our way through a couple episodes, and commenting on the celebrities that often guest starred on the show like, Milton Berle, John Ritter, Charo, and others, a common theme seemed to arise.
Captain Stubbing was one militant son of a gun!
I remember the real-time show many years ago, and I always had fond memories of the Ship's Captain, but in two episodes, I've made my mind up that he was a bit of a totalitarian. =)
Some cases in point:
- His crew could only be happy when he was.
- Caught laughing without his inclusion made you subject to extra work assignments and belittlement.
- When he was in a good mood, and his crew was struggling with their fluctuating emotions, he would reprimand them for their somber faces. </b>
What in the world happened to Mr Stubbing?
I feel like my younger years have been robbed by reality! Of course I only say this so you aren't taken back when you revisit (because I'm sure you will... I mean its the Love Boat for pete's sake!)
What scares me more is the fact that our next dvd is "Chips" the old California highway patrol. I'm not sure I can deal with a reality slap from Ponch and Jon.
Does anyone feel my pain? Has any old notalgic series changed your naive impression of old? Ouch. =)
