Secrets to professional copywriting- part 2

Posted 10-26-2009 at 10:10 AM by katiepanton

“Hypnotic writing is intentionally using words to guide people into a focus mental state where they are inclined to buy your product or service”

Joe Vitale- Hypnotic writing.

When you are copywriting for your business, to make your sales letters more emotional and personal to the person reading them, there are a few rules that if you follow, will dramatically increase your results.

One of the most important things is making your copywriting very personal to you; use your personality in your writing because people will pick up on any humour/ sympathy/ passion, etc, you pour into your words, as you would in conversation, and it gives them something about you to relate to. This goes back to the point that I have made previously that people do not buy your product or service. Before they buy anything you offer, they first buy you, because if they don’t like or trust you, then they won’t do business with you. It’s very basic, but very few entrepreneurs bear this in mind when they are writing copy, that people buy from people they like. So you are building a sense of intimacy and friendship when you let your personality flow through your words. This allows them to get to know you and trust you, you build rapport and a relationship with them. This is when your sales start taking place, so don’t disregard the importance of this.

This, like anything new to you, will take time to evolve your style and get used to writing in a way that feels natural to you, particularly because you have been conditioned through education the ‘correct’ way to write. But the correct way doesn’t necessarily bring in money in our field of professional copywriting. People want personality, truth, text that is relatable, and easy to understand. Just like you were having a personal conversation with them. The point of the sales letter is to gently introduce them to your offer, light up all the lovely benefits they will get from your offer, and you must alleviate any fears, doubts, questions and worries, not to produce the most outstanding grammar and punctuation as a narrator, because you’re appealing to their emotions, so the importance is in the depth of the message and the quality of communication, not the superficial literature. You’re customers won’t be sat there with a red marker ticking off your mistakes ready to give you a grade at the end of the letter, they’re in it for the content and connection. People are so sceptical, particularly on the internet, what they want and need is a new voice, a trusted friend who will speak to them in a relaxed and genuine, caring manner. However, so often, when many sit down to write their creative juices dry up in the focus of making the most perfect sales letter, using the most perfect grammar, punctuation paragraphs, etc. Don’t get me wrong, being coherent and intelligible in your writing is important, but that’s not the direct focus of your copywriting energies.

“If we were all taught to speak the same way we were taught to write, we would all stutter” Mark Twain

Learn to get flexible, loose and playful with yourself when you’re writing. Don’t correct yourself or make yourself wrong, let the words flow from within, get into the natural rhythm and express yourself.

Next, is when you’re writing, vigilantly give your reader what it is that they want and they will listen to you. People always ask 3 questions when reading a sales letter:

- Who cares?

- So what?

- What’s in it for me?

Always remember that your readers are reading your copy for their own personal reasons, not yours, so always be sure to address these questions right from the beginning or you will lose them. Translate your copy into clear benefits for them, in coherent language, evoking emotion within them, which will be the catalyst in causing them to buy from you. So everytime you state a fact, make sure that you clearly describe how that fact will benefit your reader.

“Get out of your ego and into your reader’s ego. Translate what you want to say into simple words and concepts that make sense to your readers” Joe Vitale- Hynotic writing
