Leadership development- How to position yourself as an effective leader
As an internet marketer, our industry is becoming increasingly more competitive, so it’s vital that you do everything you can to stand out, and to give yourself a face for people to relate to. The important thing to remember is that you don’t need to wait until you feel that you are a leader or until someone appoints you as a leader, because that point will never come. The secret is that being a leader is a self-fulfilling prophecy; you have to see yourself as, feel yourself as, do what it takes to be a leader, then you will become one naturally, because you’re wiring your brain that way, but nobody who is seeing you online will know the difference. It’s a great exercise to think of all the leaders who you follow and make a quick note of why you follow them: - What are their characteristics? - How do they come across to you? - What is it about them that makes you trust them? - Why do you listen to them? - How do you feel when you listen to/ watch/ read some of their material? - What makes them a leader in your eyes?
It’s so important that you recognise this information because this is the difference between them and you, and if you can close the gap by realising what fills the gap, and become the characteristics in the gap then you can put yourself across just like they do. Of course this takes personal development, personal paradigm shifts and inner work, but it’s always a working progress and you never get the point where you say “I’m there!”, you just keep climbing, so there’s nothing stopping you from starting now, as they say “practice makes perfect!”. Some of the characteristics of a leader include:
- Self assertive - Positive - Driven - Confident - Charismatic - Motivated - Passionate - An independent thinker - Moves against the crowd - Respectful - A good listener - Interesting (which means being interested in others!) - Inspiring - Self assured - Relaxed - A good energy to be around - Playful nature - Encouraging and nurturing - Quick to impart their knowledge and wisdom - Comfortable in their own skin, ability to take themselves lightly - Spiritual depth - Authentic and genuine - An action-taker - Trustworthy - Mentally strong - Discliplined - Sense of humour - They lead by example
Add to the list as you will, but you get the point. They’re the type of people who don’t have to prove who they are or what they have achieved by boasting about it or by having to be the centre of attention; if you come across correctly people will assume what you have and who you are anyway. Leading by example is much more powerful. You see, a real leader doesn’t have to shout or prove it because they don’t get satisfaction from admiration; they just want to serve, it’s selfless. Somebody who needs to prove is looking for verification, which is an outlet for their insecurity, and people will sense it and won’t follow you.
So what you can take from this is to create a character of yourself as a leader. Write down all the characteristics you as a leader will have, how you will come across, etc, and create a character, and every time you do something in your business you will step inside this character, and soon it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. So be it, don’t say it, and people will assume everything that’s implied, and they will follow. Just imagine who you would trust and follow, and you have a good start there. The more you play this character, the more real it will feel to you and you will start to compress time because before you know it you will have truly become this leader that you created.
Nobody’s going to nominate you as a leader, you have to put yourself up for it; all the notable leaders out there now were never put there by somebody, they positioned themselves there. They were able to do it by focusing on the higher purpose. They absolutely believed in what they were saying and that they were helping people by passing on their knowledge. At the end of the day, you have value and knowledge that can help to transform somebody’s life, so it doesn’t matter how much experience you have, you just need to learn to value yourself and start seeing yourself as that leader. Take your personal self out the equation and see yourself as the source who is passing on this vital knowledge to those who need it, and they’re grateful to you for helping them. Pass on your knowledge, and although they need to know you and buy into you first, it ultimately isn’t about you, it’s about how you can help them, what they get from you, because their main goal is what’s in it for them. So that makes things easier to deal with mentally!
You’re becoming the guiding light for others who haven’t found the way yet. You’re a helper to these people, and if you’re really struggling with your self esteem, look at it from the angle that ultimately you’re being selfish by not getting over your own personal demons by not sharing this valuable information with them! That will soon boost your sense of worth! What will happen is that the more value that you create and add to other people, the more it will back to you, many times over. Give it patience and persistence, stay consistent and add value everyday, and soon your output will compound and you will suddenly find an exponential growth in your own results, but you must stay consistent and put out real value to get this.
Whilst your helping people and passing on your knowledge as a leader, it’s vital to remember the status quo, because you’re not superior than them because you’re teaching them. You’re telling them what they don’t know, and you’re helping bring out the leader in them so they can learn to fly on their own. It’s like teaching them to fish so they can fend for themselves; you don’t ultimately own the whole supply and hand out the fish as and when you see fit, you’re helping them to become the hunters they already are. So you’re not trying to be someone’s guru, you’re helping them discover the powerful leader that they are too, so your job is to empower and light the way. When people see you like this they will trust you. Follow you and love you.
Overcoming your own demons and limited thinking can be a huge personal mountain for you to climb, but as Anthony Robbins says, “A journey of 1000 miles starts with the first step”. What you’re really doing is expanding your comfort zones, taking yourself to higher ground, which of course initially is going to be uncomfortable, but start now, so it anyway, get out your own way and watch yourself grow! If you struggle with fear and overcoming obstacles, read ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’ by Susan Jeffers, it’s a hugely empowering book and it absolutely will change your attitude, outlook and quality and experience of life.
Just remember that you get back what you put out, so make yourself valuable and believe in your own gifts and inner power, and never be afraid to let yourself shine!
