YouTube Violation Leads to Google Search Ban

Posted 08-03-2011 at 10:51 AM by kindsvater

This is the first time I have seen this - a deindexing and ban of a website in Google search for apparently violating YouTube policies.

It is an excellent lesson in Google using it's various services to punish anyone who violates one.

This risk is becoming greater and greater for marketers. If you violate an Adwords rule are you at risk for losing your gmail account, Adsense, and search rankings?

The website is essentially a spam site. The concept is you embed videos from YouTube to the website, plaster your ads around them, then try to get your copy of the video ranked to make money from anyone clicking on your ads.

YouTube policies, however, prohibit the mass commercial embedding of videos unless you have additional, valuable content on your pages that would otherwise (without the existence of the videos) justify the advertising.

Note that one does not need to have a YouTube account to share videos.

So what Google did is deindex and completely ban this site from it's search results.

Presumably, any website associated with that domain, and anyone who put Google Adsense ads on their videos pages, is now also at risk.

It is possible the Google search ban resulted entirely separate from the YouTube violation because the site in question has little reason to exist except to leach advertising revenue from YouTube videos.

Typically, though, even the worst spam sites are not banned in Google - just drop kicked to the bottom of the search listings.

What happened here is different. A ban. So it looks like a violation at one Google property led to a ban at a second Google property.

Keep this in mind the next time you jump into using Google products and link them all together.

You could be putting all of your eggs in one basket.
