How to Make a Quality Affiliate Site
Posted 01-25-2010 at 04:42 PM by kindsvater
Warriors are continually posting questions about how to make a quality affiliate site. Specifically,
How can they get good search engine rankings?
How can they avoid being slapped as a thin affiliate site?
How can they get approved by eBay?
How do they make money?
The formula is simple and proven to work for many years: Create a website focused on providing unique and interesting content that will captivate a visitor.
Selling is secondary.
As soon as you make selling your primary focus, it's over. You're just wasting your time.
If you provide unique, quality content then the 'selling' will come naturally. That is because visitors will be interested in your site. They will be engaged. Then they will have a reason to click here and there, and to buy things for which you get an affiliate commission.
Here is a new site I just created: Gorn Shop
Notice that this is a 'selling' site - starting with the word 'shop' in the domain name. Then, there is a steady list of products with affiliate links.
However, this is presented in a way to be first and foremost of interest to Star Trek fans and collectors. Extra items, such as videos, are included to engage the visitor. No money is made from them. In fact, there are not even Adsense links. Not every page needs to be monetized.
In this example all the content is unique and not copied from merchant product descriptions.
There is extra value to visitors because the site as a whole is one big directory of Gorn items - the only directory on the net. But it's not just a directory as it includes useful information (sometimes slanted to help drive a sale, such as noting how rare an item is).
And there is value from the entertaining nature of the site.
Just keep the primary goals in mind: what is of interest to the visitors? How can you provide unique value to them? Do that, and you'll have a winning site that avoids all the pitfalls Google and company dislike about some affiliate sites.
