New ways to make money

The economic recession is known as a period where economic activity is reduced. Talks about a possible recession had been discussed since 2007. Economists and specialists have now confirmed the economic slowdown. In the US, recession has been declared since December 2007. Other countries are also in economic recession or slowdown, including the United Kingdom, Japan and even China. Because of that economic slowdown, many have lost their jobs and seen their savings tumble down.
It is becoming difficult to finding money. However, some people have found new ways to generate income.
Mostly popular among the student population because known as an easy and fast way to make money, clinical research studies or clinical trials are now popular among the general population as a way to generate income. Clinical trials involves participants to testing new drugs, in order to gather safety and efficacy data of a new drug, leading to a potential release on the market.
Some clinical trial volunteers can bring up to $25,000 a year by enrolling in several clinical research studies. Those volunteers enroll in a clinical trial and undergo several tests such as checking vital signs, electrocardiograms, breathing tests, exercise tests, before and after receiving a treatment, which consists of a potentially marketable drug or therapy. Those participants have to give blood up, sometimes several times during a visit day at the clinical research center. Hence, participants who volunteer in several trials during a year can give blood up to 300-400 times throughout the year and tested as many as a dozen of new treatments or placebo throughout the year.

The number of visits and hours participants have to be at the clinic, and how much is paid depend on the type of clinical trials and on the stage of the product development the participants are enrolled in. Each visit can pay 50$ to 500$ and each clinical trial can be as short as a few days or as long as a few years. A study can require several consecutive visit days at the clinical research center and participants can also be asked to keep a record of their treatment or specific factors between the visits, to assess if there are nay improvements or side effects related to the investigational medication. There is a compliance expectation from the volunteers, which is important to allow accuracy of the safety and efficacy data.
It is important to remember that there are always safety (unknown side effects) concerns, especially if the new drug is at its early stage development. Nevertheless, the well-being of every subject is a priority for any pharmaceutical companies and the staff conducting the clinical research. Participants have the right to withdraw their consent at any time, without any given reason.
In conclusion, in times of economic recession, new ways of generating income can bring a huge relief on people life. Some people are now full-time “lab rats”, making their living of clinical trials and in spite of the possible side effects, participating in clinical trials is their creative way to generate enough money to pay their bills.
