Here is a link to Matt Cutt's recent video where he discusses the page speed vs. relevance debate on how Google's algorithms relate to what Google serves up for search engine results:

While Matt certainly states that websites with content relative to the search engine query will be served up regardless of the site's download speed, when you are considering that you are trying to beat however many other sites in your niche with relative content it just stands to reason that if my site loads in .005 seconds, and someone else's site has a flash video that takes 20 seconds to download, my site (if it has relevant content on it) will rank higher in the search engines.
I currently use Chrome as my browser and page load times are blazingly fast. I enjoy just hitting a page, scrolling, reading, and moving on. I don't want to wait for some razzle dazzle flash video that takes too long to load that doesn't add anything to my user experience, or give me any additional details. I was on a site last week that was in total flash - UGH!
Good thing that trends change in what's hot and new for us web designers.
