College Football and Internet Marketing
Posted 12-20-2008 at 11:55 AM by Ldimilo
What do Lou Holtz and I have in common? As an avid college football fan, I have to say that this is perhaps the most exciting job that has come my way in a long time. Here is how it went down.
I spoke with this woman and her husband from Merrill Lynch and we got in the discussion of what I do (it was a casual conversation). Anyway, she was looking to bolster her website and go national b/c things were kind of waning due to the economy.
Her husband mentioned that he was entertaining the idea of building a sports website. I kind of blew it off because I figured he was just another "guy who wanted to build a general sports site". He also mentioned that his son in law was an online professional poker player and he wanted to integrate the two together.
Long story short, anyone who has tried to rank for "buy" gambling keywords knows that that in and of itself is a big time job.
But it gets better. Yesterday, he contacted me and gave me some information about himself...
He actually coached college football under Lou Holtz and a couple other programs. In fact, he was an assistant coach for Notre Dame when they went to the championship! Plus, he had a radio show (local) and all sorts of contacts.
So, let me ask you....
Given his credentials, wouldn't you agree that this SEO/web design job will be world's easier to rank (think about it...he comes from many accredited universities and is affiliated with several local and national sports stations)?
Talk about a windfall....
Plus, given my "love for the game", this will be one of those SEO jobs that I will truly love to do....God, I love my job!
Anyway, just a rant....

The fallacy of SEO Celebrity
Lee Oden pretty much sums it up in this quote:
An amazing number of people seem to think becoming well known in the search marketing business is an end in and of itself. Not seeing the forest for the trees, these folks put vast amounts of time into link bait ridden blogs, networking up and getting addicted to the rush of ego that comes from being recognized. Is it because they misunderstand reputation marketing or are they really thinking being a “SEO celebrity” is a bankable goal?
