Ice Breaker as new member of Warrior Forum

For more than 12 years I worked for various organizations as HR Practitioner and Human Resources Manager. I never thought of becoming an author. Back in 2008, I suddenly found myself without a job. Finding myself unemployed for the first time in my life, my initial reaction was panic. Before I could start getting into serious job-hunting frame of mind, I came to my senses and realized that more than 12 years of living from pay cheque to pay cheque and achieving very little in a lasting sense was more than enough. It is not that I have not thought about leaving before. In fact, I have frequently fantasized about exiting the pay cheque job and doing something meaningful for myself. A few times I even got close to leaving my pay cheque job, but fear and life circumstances always conspired against me. I invariably chose the easier way out - after all, there is nothing much more secure than a government pay cheque coming in every month.
I knew in my heart that it was time for me to move on to other more creative challenges in my life, beyond the 8h00 to 5h00 job. But what exactly I was going to do, I did not know. The one common observation I picked up about the majority of people not landing their perfect jobs, was lack of proper preparation. Due to this lack of preparation many otherwise qualified people lose their chance at employment, both young people starting a career and seasoned professionals thinking of changing jobs. I knew something about this, having been in the Human Resources environment for more than 12 years. It was this thought that made me to hand –in my lap-top, cell phone and office keys to my employer at 11h06 on 31 October 2008 right in the middle of a recession.
