Do You Want To Write an Article, Report, or eBook? Just Tell ‘em.

Posted 12-08-2008 at 05:02 AM by Lynette Crase

Article writing is one of the most lucrative parts of IM. It is beneficial on so many different levels.

If you have an ebook inside of you just waiting to get out, but can’t seem to get started on it perhaps instead of trying to write the entire ebook at one time chapter by chapter you should think in terms of writing one article.

Assuming you have sufficient knowledge of a subject you should have no problem writing one short article of from 500 to 700 words. If you put 15 to 20 short articles together you have the makings of a nice report or eBook.

There are many ways to write one short article on a subject you are familiar with.

You could imagine that you are giving a speech in front of a group of fellow workers or friends. The purpose of your speech is to inform your audience of just one particular facet of your subject.

Have your setting in mind. Set it up in your mind something like this. How long am I going to speak? Will I be standing or setting. Will I be dressed casually or will I be dressed in business attire. Is it nighttime or daytime? Am I the only speaker or am I one of several speakers. If I’m one out of a few or even many speakers will I go first? Will I go last? Or will I be somewhere in the middle?

The setting mind exercise is important because it puts you in the proper mindset or mood to “give” your speech.

Now plan your speech. For the purpose of writing only one short 500 to 700 word article you need only to be planning a 5-minute speech. However long your speech (article) will be you need only 3 things. You need…

  • An introduction
  • A body
  • A conclusion

This is so simple yet we tend to over complicate it. The following list which identifies each element of the speech (in this case article) is not original to this article. It is an old anecdote that has been passed around by public speakers and trainers for years. It can be applied to this method of “speech giving” article writing.

  • Tell ‘em what your gonna tell ‘em (Introduction)
  • Tell ‘em (Body)
  • Tell ‘em what you told ‘em (Conclusion)

Start the tell ‘em, tell ‘em, tell ‘em method before you even think of a title for your article (speech) just start “talking” with your fingers on the keyboard or pencil to paper.

Do not make corrections as you go (remember you are giving a speech so just keep “talking” until you have told ‘em (Introduction) told ‘em (body) and told ‘em (conclusion)

Now read your speech, spell check and grammar check. Think of a great title for your speech. (This will be the name of the chapter in your ebook or just the title of your one article if you are only writhing an article.)

There you have it, a 500 to 700-word “speech” that is a very nice article.

By the way, for your information, this article was written using the tell ‘em method.
