When Will GoogleNews Legitimize The Internet?

Posted 03-01-2009 at 12:56 PM by Marige

Generally speaking Google News would be the best source for news online… except, of all things, it treats online news like a poor step child.

The internet in general is still treated like this in many ways. I battle it daily as I work as a freelance online writer and marketer. Offline writers claim that, because I only write online, I’m not a REAL writer (I make real money, though… what does that tell you?) And, due to the level of scammers, online opportunities are still viewed with deep suspicion by many people. The bottom line is, that while many have made millions online, it is still treated by the general public as something of a highly combustible novelty, one to be treated with kit gloves, lest it blow up in their face. Overcoming this prejudice is a daily task.

And to be expected. Only faith in the virtue of the overall population and general honesty of the average person keeps most of us going.

But to find that one of the leading forces in the industry seems, in their news feeds, to denigrate the industry as well is, at best, discouraging; at worst, it officiates the general feeling of suspicion and mistrust of the internet.

Like anything else, I’m sure Google has its crosses to bear. The recent speculation over its motivation for interest in Twitter and the multiple apps, not to mention the talk of anti-trust difficulties are just a few examples of this. But Google has always promoted the web and, in so doing, done much to legitimize it.

So why don’t they add a section to their news area devoted specifically to online news?

They do report on online news, though usually several days behind the major news sources that focus on the internet. And, strangely enough, they ignore some of the top internet news sources. I invariably check WebProNews for information — and usually find it there at least a day or so ahead of Google News. Why? Because when I do find a story in GoogleNews, the sources are based offline. Why?

It’s enough that the entire online community must suffer for the mistakes and stupidity of the bottom-feeders. But to authenticate that suspicion by proxy, i.e., by acquiesing to the wishes of the offline community, is only fueling those flames, and legitimizing their prejudice. Will they ever be put out? Only if major online players like Google take a pro-online stand. And one way to do that is to begin listening to the legitimate online community. It does exist. In fact, it’s a large, well-established world, no matter what the offline community would have the world believe.
