Why a Successful Home Business Needs the Support of Your Family

Posted 03-19-2010 at 09:23 AM by mattlaclear

If you’re a work-at-home mother or father, the chances are you have your hands very full. Not only do you have to fit in your work hours but you may also have the additional responsibility of tidying up the house, picking up the kids from school, doing the shopping and a number of other tasks.

While working from home sounds very stress free in most cases, home workers can end up doing twice the amount of work they would do if they worked outside the home. If you’re starting a new business, this situation can become even more stressful and long hours and late nights quickly become the norm.

By gaining the support of your family early on in your business, you stand a better chance of seeing your home business become a success. Here are a few strategies to help you get the family on your side.

Have a heart-to-heart:

If you haven’t done so already, sit your family down and talk with them. Explain why the success of your business is so important, not only to you but to the whole family. Ask them to help you and agree on what each family members role will be in helping your business succeed.

Ask for help:

If both you and your partner are both working full-time hours, it may be time to get support. Hire a trusted babysitter or family member to help you. Depending on your needs, you may get them to help you collect the children from school, babysit them for a few hours or even help you around the house.

The bottom line is that we all need support. There are only so many hours in the day and you can’t possibly do it all on your own. If your budget doesn’t allow for additional help, perhaps you can start a babysitting circle or even ask a well-meaning family member for a little help during tough times.

Set a schedule:

The best way to manage a busy household and business is to be organized. Set a daily schedule which includes everything that needs to be done – chores, the children’s activities and clubs, your work tasks and so on.

Keep this schedule in a clear place where each family member can see it so that everyone knows what to expect.

Assign a to-do list:

Even the youngest family member can learn to work as a team. In order for your business and family to work together, everyone needs to pitch in and help. Have a talk with your family about the responsibilities of each member of the family. For example, dinner can be cooked by a different person each day. Laundry can be taken care of in a similar way, as can all other chores that need to be done.

Building a business isn’t easy but by being open and asking for help, it becomes much easier to see your business succeed.
