Are digital free gifts worth the effort?

In these forums, the digital free gift reigns supreme. It seems like everybody is giving away 1, 2, 3 or maybe even more free downloads.
My question is, how can these free gifts possibly improve a conversion rate given there are so many of them to be had?
The main principle in economics is: The more of something there is, the less valuable it becomes
Today's challenge, should you wish to accept it, is to test a "no free download" version of your sales copy against a "free download" version. I predict your response rates will be close enough to conclude the freebie hasn't boosted response (all else being equal).
