The Great Unfollowing

Posted 06-15-2009 at 12:25 PM by MichaelHiles

After listening to several social media mavens that I respect, I decided to follow their advice in UNFOLLOWING a really substantial number of identities on my Twitter account.

First of all, I had pretty much stopped using Twitter, perceiving the value to be pretty low due to the signal to noise ratio that came along with the completely useless tool of Auto-Follow that I enabled in my own Tweetlater account.

What a bad idea.

Even with vetting... it's a bad idea. Not to be rude or crass, but I simply don't care what some fish taco hut proprietor in San Diego has to offer.

It's completely irrelevant... as well as anything that I have to say to others that aren't genuinely interested in the topics that I discuss.

Following tens of thousands of people just to get a follow back serves no purpose if there's no targeted intent.

Quite frankly, unless you're interested in my topics and niches, I DON'T want you following me. I mean... if you like me as a person, well, great, that's what I use Facebook for. Friend me on FB and I'll put you into the appropriate category.

Now, I realize that statement brings up the issue of TweetDeck and its awesome grouping function. So why not just use this, right?
Well, like many people, I started using Twitter on a "lark" (haha bad bad bad joke...) and just started following some people. Then I learned how to use Tweetlater and set up the auto follow and auto DM. I posted some stuff here and there, but it got to be pretty useless fairly quickly with every comealong who wanted to follow me, but not necessarily me wanting to follow them.

Again, it's all about relevance. And if I'm not relevant to you, then you shouldn't care what I have to say. If you're not posting things of relevance to me, well... it's not that I think you're a bad person, but I really am not interested in your tantric meditation hair salon.

Follow me? (har har har... I did it again...)

    great unfollowing - Twitter

    Hey there Michael,

Thought you might be interested in this article (Twitter quitters)

Twitter Quitters Post Roadblock to Long-Term Growth | Nielsen Wire

Seems there is a 60% drop off of Twitters after the first month. I'm not a fan of Twitter. I think it is a waste of time....more intrusive than the daily email inbox if you ask me!

I agree with you that we should be more efficient with our time

    Regards,

    Bruce
