Why is it Important to Know Who are your Readers?

One of the most common mistakes that writers make is creating a write-up that is unsuitable for the target audience of the site. It is not enough to come up with a good piece that’s prolifically written. Writers must keep in mind who the readers are and adjust their style accordingly. Without giving importance to this, the message of the content can be misunderstood or it can totally miss getting the point across.

For a writer that wants to come up with a useful and informative article that is geared towards the right audience, it all starts with the question of who are you really writing for. It is important to come up with a list of qualities that would comprise the profile of your audience. There are big differences in writing for certain groups of people and this profile would serve as a guide to make sure that the writer would hit the mark.

Research must certainly be done even before one would conceptualize a topic. Not only will this make sure that the approach to the topic would be correct but it would also have other benefits that any good web developer would appreciate. It is after all important in optimization, creating linkages and even in advertising! Everything comes to its place once the target audience is known and understood.

Take for example if you are going to write for a website that is geared towards adolescent girls. You have already done the first part, which is to identify who are your readers. From this, you could probably surmise that your style of writing should be informal, it should make them feel that you are sharing an experience with them and that you should use words that can easily be understood. Injecting technical terms would not only make them puzzle, but it would also potentially bore them to death. For this type of audience, get your point across directly yet don’t make them think hard for it.

Speaking of thinking, it is vital for the writer to think about what information the audience may already know. Producing an article that is too advanced for the readers can turn them off just as much as an article that presents something that they already know. Also, get an idea of what terms are suitable. For casual readers or those that just wants a backgrounder about certain topics especially light subjects, technical jargon would just pull the article down. For technical or academic writing, it is of course expected for technical terms to be used.

As a writer, keep mind to always be flexible in terms of the styles. Settling for one that you are good at is not just restrictive but it can hinder your website from letting the right people know what it is about and what actions would you like them to do after reading. Would you like them to just be informed, to actually convince them to buy or you want them to form a good opinion of your products or causes.

Just a simple tip, if you really have no distinct idea with regards the likes and dislikes of your audience in terms of writing style, get a clue from feedback of the present write-ups. If you have lukewarm response, then perhaps it is time to think about changing how they are written and the way the topic is handled. The main goal of all this after all is to communicate effectively with the right people.
