The Art of Deception

A Shocking Story
by Norma Holt

When my friend, Mary, opened her back door, first thing in the morning, she was startled to find the dog holding the neighbor's dead rabbit in its mouth. They had been friends for years and always got along but this was something that might end their relationship.

Both had rabbits and they loved them dearly. They were pets who roamed their gardens and were known by all.

Quickly Mary sprang into action. She called to her daughter to help and they took the disheveled, filthy and barely recognizable beast from the dog. Plunging it into a basin of beautiful warm soapy water they tenderly scrubbed away until all the dirt was gone.

Rubbing it with a towel and blow drying it carefully they restored the fur to something of its previous beauty. Satisfied with their work they then tip toed into the neighbor's yard and replaced the animal into the hutch from which they were sure it had recently escaped. This was all done before anyone in the house was awake.

Satisfied with their work they went on with their day.

First things first. Mary is a diabetic and food is essential but sometimes it is apparent that the wits are a little slow and they may be worse in the mornings before taking food. At least that's how she comes across. But a more gentle loving woman you won't find but, perhaps, she is too kind at times.

Desperate for her breakfast Mary could now eat at last but the anxiety remained. She knew how the neighbour would feel at her loss.

Tidying the kitchen after the meal she was suddenly startled by screams coming from the next door's yard. Both her and daughter rushed to see what had happened.

They found the neighbor in tears, waving her arms about like a lunatic, and dancing around on the lawn as though bitten by a snake.

“What on earth's the matter.” Mary asked startled. The neighbor was normally a sober respectable woman. This could not be said of her now as one would be forgiven for thinking she had downed a bottle or two.

“Its my rabbit,” she sobbed. “It died yesterday and I buried it but its back now in the hutch all clean and looking remarkable.” Mary thought she looked as though she would soon faint.

The two culprits slunked a little at the unintended shock they had given this poor woman. Would they do such a thing again? Well, the big question is why did they do it in the first place. What was the cover up all about?

Mary had a love for the woman and could not bear to see her hurt. The trouble was she could see now that she had made the whole situation intolerable, for both of them.

There is a lesson to be learned here. Its better to face the music, no matter how bad it might be, than to deceive. Sure, dogs do kill rabbits and they do dig up bodies of small animals if they can get to them. But should it be covered up and what was the advantage gained?

Poor Mary. She had to confess all to the neighbor and offer her sympathy and support for most of the morning. Fortunately she was on hand to make amends and explain the innocence of her deception. Many deceivers, however, and do not make amends. They take all and give nothing.

The worst deceivers are certain salespeople who choose, for some unknown reason, to lie and hype products up to make them more appealing. That applies also to Internet Marketing and, in fact, to any kind of selling.

Anyone who tries to flog off the proverbial dead horse to unsuspecting customers will pay the price. It happens! So beware of what you buy, whom you deal with and how they treat you. It seems that in today's world of enormous competition deception rules the day.
