The Rise of the App

As 2011 is underway it is clear now that the “App” is not to be dismissed as a fad as over 1.6bn mobile smart devices were sold last year. This was cemented with the total market for apps worth $2.2 billion last year, up from $828 million in 2009.
This year is going to be a clear year with apps becoming more and more part of the digital culture with more businesses working on there own apps to close in on this digital cash cow.
But will it be sustained ?
With current trends pointing in a positive direction with the launch of the iPad last year and with a host of tablets being launched this year we expect the next 5 years to continue the steady growth of the app.
With apples launch of the App store for Macs and with there next generation of OSX brining a more app experience we can see the evolution of apps being brought over to the desktop world. In a few years we can see this becoming a staple part of the Windows and Linux environment too.
But what is the next big thing from here, well its hard to say, with the entertainment industry pointing to a move into 3d and with most it firms developing ultra portability computing systems. With this move to ultra mobile, always connected computing our money is on cloud applications taking the lead.
