Freelance Writing for Hire

Posted 01-20-2011 at 03:02 AM by Ouroboros

I sorta got sidetracked for a few days because I fully intended to make this post a comparison of all the different ways you could monetize article writing and get paid for it.

I soon realized that I'd rather get on with it and make some money and come back to that later if enough people show an interest. I'm too busy writing so that I can show some income at the end of my first week to get bogged down in that right now.

Suffice it to say I have opted for the direct payment model, where I write articles and submit them for up-front payment. I decided this was the best avenue to pursue and will show income faster than any of the others.

Writing for wages is obviously never going to make you rich, but getting paid something on a regular basis can provide the incentive to pursue some of the other opportunities.

I registered at Elance, Guru, Odesk, Scriptslance as my sites to bid on jobs first. Then I registered at Associated Content, Demand Media, and the WritersNetwork. Finally, I registered at Seed.com, Textbroker, and LondonBrokers.

I had all the activation emails sent to the one gmail account that I opened earlier and proceeded to sign in to each account and wander around a bit. I had no idea so many sites could do basically the same thing in so many different ways!

Each site almost needs its own explanation, but rather than do that I'm going to attempt to explain the similarities and my impressions of each. Almost every site requires a resume or biography, and a writing sample - before you can start writing for them. This put me off a bit as I was hoping to start writing for some money right away, not write for free for the privilege of writing...lol

(BTW, this isn't my writing style! I write a lot better than this when I need to, this is more of a brain dump where I blurt out what I'm thinking at the end of the day)

I soon discovered that Seed.com didn't require all that stuff to get started but paid quite handsomely! Unfortunately, the variety of writing jobs there was very specific and specialized and not something I could do starting out.

Textbroker had the least requirements of the ones that wanted samples up front, a 120-250 word article on a topic that they provide. The three topics they gave me were not something I would have chosen if given a list, but I had to buckle down and write if I was going to work so I took my time and wrote what I thought was a nice piece, in hopes of getting a good initial author rating.

Then, while I was waiting for their approval, I found LondonBrokers (AMA) and discovered that I needed to submit nothing before I could begin writing for them! Hot Damn! Let's get started!

[Next: What I've learned writing at AMA and how I'm going to get paid this friday!]
