Keyword Research: Importance of AllinTItle, AllinUrl, Exact etc.

I've seen several of us warriors get confused regarding the importance of the number of competing sites for different search parameters I.e. AllinTitle, AllinUrl, Exact, etc.
Some are asking what should they use to assess whether a keyword is viable and worth the effort to compete on. Some say that they don't consider the value of "Exact" competition and only look at "allintitle" and "allinurl", while others say the opposite.
As for me, it's both. You see these figures are actually indicators of how hard it is to dominate a certain keyword phrase, and if you only base you decision on one or two indicators, then there's a possibility that you'll come up with a wrong decision that would be costly.
Think of Exact, AllinTitle, AllinUrl as indicators that a keyword is easy. If most of these are low, in my case "Low" means lower that 50,000 then it's a go.
Let's say for example that Exact is 50,000 but AllinTitle and AllinUrl is way more..then that's only one out of three indicators. So to me it's a no go.
However, it doesn't stop there. As I earlier said, these are just indicators, and there's more. You'll still have to check the strength of the top sites. This is another indicator.
If the competing sites have low inbound links, something that you can easily beat by using Angela's backlinks, then it's a go. However, if after looking at the sites you found out that Yahoo's site explorer returns a lot of backlinks, then its again an indicator of a no-go.
In the end you should make your decision whether to pursue a keyword phrase based on statistics, how many GO's and NO-GO's did you get.
By doing this you'll be making a decision based on facts and not merely on wild guess.
