SEO Keyword Research: What it is and How To Do It

Posted 01-18-2010 at 11:46 PM by rapidscc

Don’t underestimate keyword research, if you want your contents found in Google or any other search engines, this is a must. Writing without targeting keywords is like shooting without aiming. You are bound to hit something if you do it continuously but you won’t know what it will be and when.

By targeting keywords, you’ll be able to monitor your ranking progress. All you’ll have to do is to check the keywords in Google’s search and you’ll see if your site is being indexed. Contrary to just writing without targeting keywords where you’ll have no idea whether you’re being found by people searching for information.

Keyword research is all about looking for what people are typing in the search engines to find information about your niche. This is important because if you write about topics that aren’t searched for, you won’t have any readers, and without readers, there won’t be a chance to make money through your contents.

Keyword research is indeed lucrative. There are people whose business model relies only on looking for low competition keywords and putting up a site promoting some products for those keywords. Some are earning five figures per month doing this.

For most Internet marketers with enough keyword experience, finding low competition keywords with decent monthly searches is like finding gold, they know how easy it is to make money off of these. Just create some decent content, solve a problem related to the keyword and recommend a decent product to solve the same problem much faster and you’ll be assured to make money from it.

The basic of keyword research involves looking for seed keywords and using Google’s Keyword Tool. It will show up a list of keywords and indicate the total global and local monthly searches for those keywords. What you need to do is to look for keywords with decent monthly searches (about 3000 or more) and then check out the competition for these keywords one by one. Those with less than 10,000 competitions are hot; those with less than 5,000 competitions are gold!

However, keyword research is tedious if done manually. You’ll have to go to several websites to get keyword ideas and use Google to verify the information manually, put the information in a spreadsheet and then analyze them. I recommend that you use software to do this automatically.

I use a simple, yet very efficient Keyword Tool to do my keyword research automatically. I use keyword Miner. It will allow you to determine the keywords used by your audience in seeking for contents in your niche. I recommend you use it also. Here’s the link to the Keyword research tool (Keyword Miner).
