This blog will account for all of my activities from first hearing about IM, to where ever it might take me. As this will be an ongoing project, my longterm aims are not clearly defined...yet.
In the beginning

So, as the title suggests, I am planning to detail my passage from knowing nothing about IM, and in all fairness not actually ever hearing about it, to an end where I will be (thinking positively already!) competent in the ways of internet marketing.
Rewind to October 2007, and idle chatter in the pub between 2 friends of mine who had websites - general sites and nothing really to do with the IM world I have found out about recently. Firstly I was fascinated by the mere idea that it was relatively easy to own a piece of the web that could be used for your own ideas. Secondly was the comment that one of my friends had made a few dollars as an 'affiliate'.
I listened a bit more, and was really drawn into this other place - and I wanted in on this internet thing. At 30 years old I had never really considered the internet for anything other than the usual, everyday surfing which I guess is how most people will always use the internet. The money comment really played on my mind though and I wanted to find out more. The rest of the night passed off without much more talk about what the 2 guys had done, but the seed was set.
A few days, and some research into what an affiliate was later, I had bought a domain name, and a hosting package, and started on my first website. I won't say what it was, but it was linked to gambling (big no-no to you guys i think!), and needless to say after a few weeks of what I would call very hard and difficult work, my site was pretty much in a mess. I expected visitors to be coming almost straight away, but nothing (please bear in mind that I had done no keyword work, or even chose a specific product to focus on). In short, my first attempt was a disaster. I still have the site, and hope to do something different with it in the future. It has not been touched for about 6 months now.
So, with one failure under my belt, I lurched very swiftly to another. From articles and forums I have read since, I made the classic mistake of trying to battle with the big boys! Again, not really knowing what I was doing I ran headlong into a shopping directory website - quite adventurous for a bloke who has no computer based background knowledge! The only good thing to come from that 5 months of pain and torturous late nights was the domain name, which I am very happy with (I haven't mentioned it because I am not exactly clear on all the rules of this forum yet). All in all that was my internet life upto about May 2008.
I am conscious that this blog entry is long, and may have led to some of you either drifting off or looking for someone more interesting to read!
I shall continue in my next post!
