Counting the minutes to my first move of the year.

Posted 01-03-2010 at 10:43 PM by SantiSantana

It happens in less than three hours now. The opening of the London Stock Market. Even though at the moment I am not too focused on stocks this is something I want to check once again.

You see, apparently big investment firms dump their non strategic stocks at the end of the year to clear their balance sheets (tax and planning implications I suppose, not too versed on the technicalities of the whole thing). They then take positions again at the beginning of the year. What this means is that the first few minutes of the session see a steady rise as these firms take their first positions, which added to the weight they carry ( we are talking pension funds and big investment funds like that) make it almost inevitable that this rise happens year in year out.

When I first dabbled in Spread betting, just over two years ago, I placed an upward bet on the FTSE100 (Londonīs main index, otherwise known as the Footsie) and it worked out pretty well; a 85 point rise in less than eight minutes, of which I materialized a 75 point profit.

Regardless of the money I made (it was very little as I was on minimum bets while learning the ropes), the fact that there were a few spots here and there that usually have very predictable outcomes became a point of interest. So much so that one of the things I will be researching this year is exactly that: situations that have largely predictable outcomes you can profit from, be it stock market trends, daily events, business situations.

I am not talking just about betting or market trading. I am talking about just about any possible scenario (there seems to be a lot of these in the business world, like calendar events in which you know there are established trends you can profit from, much like the retail calendar years).

If you are in business be it online or offline, you better start thinking if there are any events or situations affecting your business which have established trends you can profit from. A quick example ( bit obvious too but you will get the idea); Christmas. If you own a restaurant and Christmas is fast approaching you should really focus some of your marketing efforts into getting those staff dinners that can be so profitable and even reputation enhancing.

I think I have made myself clear enough and there is still a number of things I need to do. I shall leave you now.
