Internet
When the Romans built the straight roads they never conceived of the concept of the car. They just used what they had - carts and walking. But the roads had to exist first so the car could be invented to fully exploit them.
We are the Romans, the Internet is the road.
We're not using the Internet anywhere near to it's full potential yet, nobody has even thought of the "car", but the potential for the "car" now exists.
Whenever our "car" is invented, that will take us truly into the Post Industrial era.
