One of the craziest things I experience almost everyday is the fact that most don't understand the importance of online marketing for their online business. If you open up your store in a physical location, you will at least place fliers around the local neighborhood or area. So what is the difference with online marketing?
Online VS. Real Life
When companies and online businesses place an ad on a billboard, they pick a spot that has a a lot of foot and automobile traffic for the best exposure. Banners and text links work the same businesses online. Companies choose web sites that offer advertising space that has tons of traffic and popularity to place their banners and text links on.
At least when a physical business opens, it has a chance of being seen by passing persons. Their are rarely any passing surfers that just happen to come across your site unless your URL is similar to a more popular web site. So Internet marketing is just short of mandatory when doing business online. Like most other SEO's and Internet Marketers will tell you, 85% of all web site traffic is produced from search engines. So if you do not a strong placement in the major search engines, then you are fighting an up hill battle.
If you Build It, They Will Come?
That may work in the real world, but not online. We cannot physically go to the Internet (at least not yet), so we cannot just walk around and see all of the web sites that are out their on the World Wide Web. That's where geeks like me come in. It's our job to find where people are in abundance on the Internet and go there to try and lure them to your web site. There are many avenues to take, and a good SEO and Internet Marketer can begin to driving traffic to your web site within their first week on the job. So if you you are someone you know decides t open up an online business, let them know that it will be a struggle without the proper online marketing web site optimization.
