Pay for advertising, but pray for publicity!

Getting free publicity is a godsend in business.
About a year ago, I sent a press release to a local television station. it garnered me 2 prime time spots on the local news.
For a grand total of less than 4 minutes of air time (2 minutes one time, 1 1/2 minutes the second), I received over 150 calls and many more visits to my website!
Another time (in another city), a 30-second spot on the local news spawned a weekend segment on the news, plus a story in the local paper! Again, the leads generated (and the sales) were fantastic! Not only that, but the "local" news station actually had an audience that was spread over 2 states - so the coverage was actualy much more than local!
A good press release is the key to getting news coverage, and local news outlets are easier than national. Local news coverage can lead to national coverage, however, if a local story is picked up by the national press.
You can easily design a campaign that gets your name "out there" - it just depends on what you are willing to do!
The media love a good story. They love stories of triumph, funny stories, unique stories. They enjoy hearing how you turned your life around, how you succeeded in hard times, how you bucked a trend.
In other words, they don't want a boring story about how you have a 10% off sale. They want to hear about how William Shatner is on your mailing list so he can visit your store when there is a 10% off sale.
Do you see the difference? One is a sales pitch. The other is news.
Come up with a newsworthy way to promote your biz.
